頭部の続きで胸部の詳細なMorphology論文。本研究の主目的はそれだけではなく、甲虫の亜目の系統関係にある。やはり、
Archostemata + [Adephaga + (Myxophaga + Polyphaga)] であると結論付け、
Kukalova-Peck & Lawrence (1993)の示した、
Polyphaga + [Archostemata + (Myxophaga + Adephaga)] を棄却している。
まぁ妥当だと思う。Lawrenceが文句をつけたScirtoideaを見ていないというところについても、別論文(Friedrich & Beutel, 2006)でしっかりまとめており、文句のつけようがない。
しっかり読んでいないがアブストラクトの、"Internalization of the partly reduced propleura, further muscle losses, and the fusion of the mesoventrites and metaventrites—with reversal in Scirtoidea and Derodontidae—are autapomorphies of Polyphaga."は気になる。本文で該当部分を読まねば。
示されている系統樹上では、Scirtoideaの位置があまり面白くない場所にあり、他論文での系統位置と異なる。甲虫目における科レベルの系統関係の解明には、まだまだ道程は遠い。
